Second Harvest of South Georgia, Inc. supplies food and grocery product to more than 300 non-profit organizations in the following counties: Atkinson, Berrien, Brooks, Clinch, Cook, Echols, Lanier, Lowndes, Thomas, and Ware. We provide more than 8 million pounds of food with a value of over 13.5 million dollars to programs such as soup kitchens, homeless shelters, emergency food pantries, church pantries, battered women’s shelters, youth homes, assisted living facilities, and senior meal programs. Hundreds of local and national companies donate on a weekly and/or monthly basis to supply the food that is distributed to our member agencies. Product Recovery Program Through this program, we harvest food from over 30 local donors each week. Each year we save an average of 1.5 million pounds of product that would normally be deposited in local landfills. Donations are collected from companies such as Wal-Mart, SAM’S, Harveys, and Food Lion, as well as local restaurants, schools, and hospitals. The food is picked up, evaluated, and repackaged for distribution at our warehouse. Kids Cafe Kids Cafe is a feeding program for all children under 18 years of age. This program provides a hot meal, a serving of milk, and an hour of homework assistance to over 1,300 children each day during the school year. We currently service the following sites in 7 counties: Boys & Girls Club Valdosta; Rope of Hope; Ora Lee West; Hudson Dockett; Quitman Elementary; North Brooks Elementary; Boys & Girls Club Thomasville; Douglas Alumni Association; Southside Recreation Center; Thomasville Community Resource Center; Boys & Girls Club Camilla/Mitchell County; Boys & Girls Club Camilla/Pelham Unit; Boys & Girls Club Camilla/Jester Unit; Boys & Girls Club Camilla/Teen Center; Boys & Girls Club Berrien County/Hwy 125; Boys & Girls Club Berrien County/Dogwood; and Boys & Girls Club/Adel Unit. If summer programs are offered at the participating facilities, up to 2 meals per day plus 1 snack (breakfast) are also provided. All meals are free-of-charge. Manna Truck The Manna Truck program provides free, fresh produce to low-income communities. Local farmers and produce packing houses donate excess goods to generate tax credits for their companies. The donated produce is delivered to low-income communities and housing centers. Members of local churches and civic organizations partner with Second Harvest of South Georgia, Inc. to coordinate the drops and participate in activities with the residents (including cookouts and games for the families who live in the centers and delivery of product to the homes of those who are physically unable to transport the goods themselves).
